Are your food delivery apps seeing more action than you are these days? Now’s the time to trim the fat, as they say, so put down your phone and pick up a spatula. Making your own meals is easier than you think. And it’s way cheaper than takeout.

First step on your CIY (cook-it-yourself) journey: Join Costco and get an annual Gold Star Membership for $60. Next, take the $10 Costco Shop Card* you get after joining (must be redeemed in-store) and put it toward this back-to-basics shopping list that will help you whip up tasty, super-affordable food every night of the week. Since Costco sells almost everything in bulk, you can stock up and be prepared for all of your midnight cravings.

Personalize this list to your tastes — porcini mushrooms, anyone? — and your next batch of noodles can be just as tasty as those from your favorite ramen spot. If your culinary chops start and end at avocado toast, no worries. Just binge-watch some cooking shows to pick up a few tricks, hit up Costco, and then get cooking.

Dry goods

Flour (almond flour for gluten-free folks), sugar, rolled oats, baking soda, rice, quinoa, at least three shapes of pasta (variety is important), dried porcini mushrooms (for a taste of umami in your broth), popcorn, nutritional yeast, chia seeds, hemp hearts, chocolate.

Liquid essentials

Extra-virgin olive oil, apple cider vinegar (it adds a kick to salads and is full of surprisingly useful household hacks), BBQ sauce, sriracha, mustard, ketchup, honey.

Finishing touches

Turmeric, curry powder, chili powder, cumin, basil, oregano, thyme, cinnamon sticks. Let the cooking commence.

*Valid only for nonmembers for their first year of membership. Limit one per household. Nontransferable and may not be combined with any other promotion. A Costco membership is $60 a year. An Executive Membership is an additional $60 upgrade fee a year. Each membership includes one free Household Card. May be subject to sales tax. Costco accepts all Visa® cards, as well as cash, checks, debit/ATM cards, EBT and Costco Shop Cards. Departments and product selection may vary.
